Managing critical utility facilities requires high operational visibility to ensure safety and efficiency. However, traditional methods for safety inductions, marketing, and training often lack the immersion needed for complex industrial sites. This creates a gap in how facilities are understood by remote stakeholders and new staff.

The Solution: A Hybrid Digital-Physical Twin

The project aimed to create a comprehensive digital and physical representation of a major facility. By integrating drone photogrammetry, 3D modeling, and Extended Reality (XR), the team developed a digital twin that serves as a versatile tool for various business needs.

Project Objective

To showcase cutting-edge drone technology and 3D modeling by providing a tool for marketing, educational, and operational purposes.

Implementation: Precision at Every Layer

To ensure the highest quality, the project followed a multi-step technical process:

  • Drone Photogrammetry: High-resolution aerial images were captured from multiple angles to create a detailed digital model.
  • 1 cm/pixel Accuracy: The Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) was calibrated to 1 cm/pixel, ensuring that every pixel represents 1 cm on the ground for exceptional detail.
  • 360 Panoramic Integration: High-quality 360-degree photos were taken at strategic spots and integrated into the model for an immersive virtual tour.
  • XR-Enabled Physical Model: A physical replica was 3D printed with embedded QR codes. Scanning these codes with a mobile device launches Augmented Reality (AR) views that provide specific component information.

The Results: Scalable Operational

Benefit

Impact

Operational Visibility Teams can explore the facility layout and safety pathways remotely.
Interactive Training Safety inductions are enhanced through immersive virtual and physical models.
Scalability The success of this Proof of Concept (POC) allows the solution to be scaled across other managed facilities.

This data-driven approach allows visitors and staff to explore site layouts and operational areas comprehensively without needing to be physically present on-site.
