Executive Summary

Managing large infrastructure changes along coastal zones requires up-to-date visual timelines.

This project shows how a commercial flight team deployed compact enterprise drones to build a complete visual progress ledger for a massive marina and shoreline development zone.

The mission focused entirely on capturing high-quality media assets to give project managers a clear look at ground progress without setting up heavy mapping workflows.

Over a brief multi-day field schedule, the team covered a sprawling landscape divided into four large operating blocks.

By utilizing stable quadcopters equipped with high-resolution cameras, the flight crew safely delivered sharp photographs, immersive panoramic views, and clean 4K videos that help site managers assess changes, check construction routes, and update stakeholders easily.

Project Parameters & SOW

The visual tracking mission was built around a detailed flight plan to ensure safe, even coverage across the entire changing property.

  • Total Project Footprint: The target area spanned an expansive 26.86 square kilometers of coastal land, which the team split into four distinct sections to make flying efficient:
    • Block 1: 9.63 square kilometers
    • Block 2: 8.23 square kilometers
    • Block 3: 3.55 square kilometers
    • Block 4: 5.46 square kilometers
  • Flight Heights & Speeds: The aircraft cruised safely at an altitude between 200 and 400 feet above ground level (AGL). The platform maintained a steady tracking velocity up to 15 meters per second (m/s) to prevent any blurry images.
  • Operational Flight Volume: The crew filled 8 to 12 total flight hours across the field schedule, launching 3 to 4 individual flights per block from safe takeoff zones near the street borders.
  • Scope of Work Goals: The team was tasked with capturing a comprehensive mix of still photos from multiple angles, full 360-degree interactive panoramas from fixed positions, and continuous video paths that followed the exact boundary line where the land meets the sea.

The Technical Hardware Fleet

Flying close to open water and active construction machinery introduces environmental risks like heavy sea winds and magnetic interference.

To protect the project, the team selected reliable, compact hardware with built-in safety features.

  • Primary Aircraft: DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise + RTK Module ➔ 45-Min Flight Limit ➔ 20MP Sharp Sensor
  • Backup Aircraft:  DJI Mini 4 Pro Platform ➔ Compact Safety Fallback

The primary flight tool was the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise quadcopter paired with a detachable RTK module.

Weighing just 1.05 kilograms, this compact drone can fly for up to 45 minutes on a single battery, giving the pilot plenty of time to cover large sections before landing.

The RTK module acts as a high-precision GPS tool that helps the drone maintain its exact position steadily in mid-air.

The drone houses a high-quality camera with a 4/3 CMOS sensor that takes sharp 20-megapixel photos through a 24mm lens.

This camera lets the pilot manually change settings like shutter speed and light sensitivity (ISO), ensuring matching colors and crisp details even during different times of the day.

As a safety fallback plan, the team carried a lightweight DJI Mini 4 Pro drone to keep the project moving forward if unexpected issues popped up.

The Six-Day Project Timeline

The project moved smoothly from initial office planning to final field delivery inside a structured six-day schedule.

Day 1  Days 2 – 3 Days 4 – 6
Office Plans Field Work & Data Gathering Computer Work & Secure Link

Day 1: Project Planning and Office Initiation
The team creates the initial work plan, sets up the flight paths, sets the sensor values, and secures the required flight permits from the project owner.

Days 2 to 3: Mobilization and Field Data Collection
The crew packs the gear, drives to the coastal site, and runs a quick ground review to check for tall cranes or power lines. Over these two workdays, the pilot and co-pilot fly the drone between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM to capture all required views.

Days 4 to 6: Data Processing and Link Delivery
The team returns to the office to organize the massive media ledger. Technicians perform color balancing on the pictures, stitch the individual photo segments into full interactive 360-degree views, trim the raw video files, and upload everything to a secure web link and a physical USB drive for the client.

Operational Outcomes & Key Deliverables

The flight team successfully completed all scenarios within the target timeline and delivered an organized visual package:

  • Top-Down Visual Assets: The drone captured clean, vertical photos with the camera pointed straight down (Nadir) to give project managers an accurate view of ground layouts and material placements.
  • High-Angle Oblique Records: The pilot tilted the camera to keep the horizon line in view, creating dramatic high-angle photos that show structural heights and shoreline shapes clearly.
  • Interactive 360 Panoramas: Technicians processed and stitched overlapping photos taken from fixed locations at multiple heights (50m, 90m, and 100m AGL), allowing viewers to digitally look around the site as if they were standing in mid-air.
  • Corridor Video Clips: The drone recorded smooth, raw 4K videos at 60 frames per second (fps) following the coast. The final package included one fully edited 2-to-3 minute video with enhanced colors for corporate tracking.
