When dealing with several square kilometers of uneven terrain, manual ground teams often spend weeks or even months walking the site to collect enough data points. In the recent project taking place in Makkah, the goal was to survey a total area of 3.75 km2 to provide the foundation for a new real estate development by Nakheel. To meet the project&#8217;s tight deadlines, the team moved away from traditional methods and turned to the sky.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>High-Tech in the Sky<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The secret to the project&#8217;s speed was the use of the <\/span><b>DJI M350 RTK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drone equipped with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/store.terra-drone.com.sa\/product\/zenmuse-l2\/\"><b>Zenmuse L2<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> laser scanner (LiDAR). Unlike a standard camera that just takes pictures, this system uses laser pulses to &#8220;see&#8221; the land in three dimensions.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Precision Flights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The drone completed <\/span><b>18 separate missions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at an altitude of 60 m to ensure every inch of the land was recorded.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Laser Mapping<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This technology is especially useful in Makkah&#8217;s rocky landscape because it can accurately measure the ground surface even when it is covered by rocks or light brush.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Safety First<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: By flying overhead, the team avoided the risks and physical strain of sending ground crews into difficult or dangerous areas of the site.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Drones vs. Ground Methods<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most impressive part of this project was how much time was saved at every stage.
